moon formation happens slowly. a planet spinning through space draws smaller particles by gravitation. a good example of this is saturn's rings. the particles of space dust that make up the bands are drawn into larger bodies by gravitation. think of it like a katamari collecting space dust until you pick up all the dust and make a moon. solar systems are made the same way. they start as bands around a star. this all takes a long time. time is gnarly.
